Beauty NEWS: NYX & L’Oréal

August 11, 2017

Strategic Acquisition of one of the Fastest Growing Makeup Artistry Brands in the USA

L’Oréal announced today the signing of a definitive agreement to acquire NYX Cosmetics. Headquartered in Los Angeles, NYX was created in 1999 by entrepreneur Toni Ko who had a vision for creating a line of high quality, on-trend professional color cosmetics at attractive prices. Rooted in professional makeup artistry and driven by an impactful social media and grassroots marketing strategy, NYX has become one of the fastest growing color cosmetics brands in the United States, reaching an expanding segment of socially connected consumers. In 2013, NYX reported net sales of 72 million US dollars, a growth of +46% vs 2012. Sales continued to record strong growth this year, amounting to 93 million US dollars for the last 12 months ended May 31, up 57% over the comparable year-over-year period.

NYX offers a broad catalogue of products that includes everyday basics, on-trend shades, special occasion makeup and cult favorites like the one of a kind The Curve eyeliner and Butter lip gloss line. The brand is currently distributed through professional beauty stores, specialty cosmetics stores, other retailers, ecommerce and some NYX branded stores.

“NYX is a dynamic company that has done a tremendous job of harnessing the power of social media, digital marketing and multi-channel distribution” said Frédéric Rozé, President and CEO of L’Oréal USA. “Both L’Oréal and NYX share a passion for innovation and a confidence in the strength and vitality of the color cosmetics market.”

NYX Cosmetics will continue to operate out of their Los Angeles headquarters under the brand’s current leadership team. The brand will become part of the Consumer Products Division of L’Oréal. This acquisition further enhances L’Oréal’s roster of American brands which includes Maybelline NY, Kiehl’s, Essie, Urban Decay and Clarisonic.

“NYX has seen tremendous growth in the last decade and I have complete confidence that L'Oreal will remain true to its brand identity and mission, which is to provide high quality, innovative professional cosmetics for women around the world," said Toni Ko, Chairwoman and founder of NYX Cosmetics. "We possess a shared commitment to creating best in class products and the NYX consumer stands to benefit enormously from L’Oréal’s extensive marketing, distribution and R&D resources.”

The closing is subject to the usual regulatory approvals and other customary conditions.

Karity: Quality shouldn't break the bank

May 01, 2017

If my eyelids could talk they would be saying "Hallelujah"! Thanks to Karity's 21 shadow in matte I've been getting my LIFE daily! They are all so rich in pigment and blend effortlessly.  But wait, the Karity palette was only $28.00; shocking right?

After a trip to a beauty counter at the local mall, Karity's creator was frustrated by the extremely high price point on a good quality eye pencil his wife had requested. This is how Karity was born.

Look how pigmented the shadows are!

Had fun with this look!

Quick Beauty Tip

March 03, 2017

You, me and everyone I know does NOT have time for a zit! So let's get straight to the quick beauty tip.  You can make an unwanted zit less noticeable instantly with an ice cube. Just place a cube on the pimple for 30 - 60 seconds, then hold a tissue dampened with eye drops or contact cleaner over it for about 3 minutes.  This causes the blood vessels below your skin to contract making a pimple less red and easing some irritation.

Coconut Oil

February 22, 2017

Yes, I know... you are not living in a bubble and you are already aware of the beauty benefits of coconut oil, but hey just in case you missed a few things or happen to be in a bubble.
(no judging lol!)

Coconut oil is used in many natural beauty products, and for good reason: It's naturally antibacterial and antifungal. Plus coconut oil for skin is an excellent moisturizer, and yes it's exactly what I use to moisturize. Well anyhoo, here are a few other tips...

DRY HAIR

Coconut oil is an incredibly intensive natural conditioner- Rub into dry hair, put a shower cap on and leave for several hours before washing out with several rounds of shampoo

ACNE

Add a few drops of coconut oil and apply on the face; use as a spot treatment overnight. Remember coconut oil is an antibacterial.

CRACKED HEELS

Apply a large amount of coconut oil on the entire feet and wear socks.  Let the oil work overnight

DANDRUFF

Add a few drops of tea tree oil to pre-warmed coconut oil and massage in the hair

MAKE-UP REMOVER

Rub coconut oil all over the face and remove all of your makeup with a with a napkin. Your makeup with slide off like butter

DEADSKIN REMOVAL

Mix coconut oil with equal parts sugar for a smoothing body scrub (use in the shower)

BLEMISHES

Coconut can help lighten age spots when rubbed directly on the skin

NAILS

Rub on cuticles to help nails grow

As always, I hope this helps! :-)

HOT WATER OR COLD WATER

February 12, 2017

Duh, when you wash your hair you just simply use warm/hot water right? Mmmmn... It depends.

Using Hot water: Hot water opens your pores in the hair root, which of course makes it easier to remove the oil and dirt from the scalp. Oily scalp=Hot water! But sadly it can leave your hair excessively porous. If the hair is too porous, then there are chances that the hair will become dry and brittle. Now although the hot water will clean the hair roots thoroughly, it will also rip off the oil from the hair roots.

But wait...

Using Cold water: By washing hair with cold water, your color won't fade and your leave-in conditioner (Co-Washing) will actually be left in, which means smoother hair. Plus, the hair cuticles will be closed, which will reduce the accumulation of the dirt and sweat in the scalp. Thereby the damage to the hair will also be reduced. It will make the hair smooth and shiny. Cold water will also improve the blood circulation to the scalp: Blood circulates faster when your scalp is cold.

How do I wash my hair? Well, I just use warm water, almost cool and every now and then I use HOT water to get rid of product build up. I've noticed that the conditioner is most effective when I wash with warm/cool water.

L’ORÉAL ACCELERATES PRODUCT DEVELOPMENT FOR SUB-SAHARAN AFRICA THANKS TO NEW RESEARCH & INNOVATION CENTER

January 15, 2017

L’Oréal inaugurated a new Research & Innovation Center to study African hair and skin specificities as well as the beauty routines and expectations of sub-Saharan consumers. The Research & Innovation Center in South Africa is the Group’s 7th R&I hub globally. It hosts product development, evaluation and advanced research teams and will employ scientists from the fields of chemistry, chemical engineering, physiology, cosmetology and biochemistry.

Alexandre Popoff, Executive Vice-President Eastern Europe and Africa, Middle East, said“Sub-Saharan Africa is one of the fastest growing regions for L’Oréal. Our new research arm in South Africa will solidly enable us to continually create the beauty products of the future for our African consumers, while drawing inspiration from the diverse beauty rituals and the various needs of our consumers on the continent.”

Laurent Attal, Executive Vice-President of Research and Innovation, said “By opening this new Research & Innovation Center, we are spearheading L'Oréal Research for the African continent. We are showing our determination to go further in innovations for the African beauty market. Our consumer surveys conducted since 2010 and our in-depth studies of skin and hair since early 2000, represent the knowledge base for the development of tailored products for African consumers. We are starting with hair and our ambitions are much broader and cover the body, hygiene, skin care and makeup categories.”

Deep knowledge of African beauty
The Research activity in South Africa started in 2003 with an Evaluation Center focused on consumer knowledge and product assessment. The mission of the brand new Research & Innovation Center is to translate beauty needs and hair and skin knowledge into innovative products ranging from hair care, hair color, relaxers and shapers to personal hygiene. Cutting edge instruments to visualize the skin surface, the spots or to measure hair breakage and rigorous protocols are used daily to assess the technical, functional and sensorial benefits of the products. The key areas will be skin evenness, sebum, acne, dryness, hair manageability, sensitive scalp and the fine tuning of fragrances.

The new Research & Innovation Center will also cooperate with the African scientific ecosystem, universities, dermatologists, natural biodiversity centers as well as hairdressers.

Innovating for the African consumer
L’Oréal has already introduced key beauty innovations for African consumers. For example, the African Beauty Brands team has brought to the market the black oil technology for hair color, failsafe relaxers as well as skin evenness routines. In addition, customized products such as Hair Food and Makeup fully adapted to African skin tones are already offered to sub-Saharan consumers.

Yaaaaassss, I am here for this!!!

The beauty benifits of Vitamin C

August 17, 2015

Have you heard about beauty benefits of Vitamin C? Well hunti, you are about to hear right NOW! I recently saw a new study and had to share...

There are certain foods that can greatly help the appearance of the skin; smoothing wrinkles and fine lines and easing skin dryness. These include healthy proteins, especially oily fish like salmon, as well as quality fats like avocados, almonds and olive oil, and the vitamins A, B, C and E.

The famous Vitamin C can significantly enhance skin health and appearance and is becoming known as an anti wrinkle vitamin. It helps to increase collagen levels in the body, which is the body’s most abundant protein. Collagen acts to connect the body together and is found in skin, hair, nails, bones and muscles.

Vitamin C is not produced naturally in the body and must be obtained from sources like citrus fruits, dark leafy greens, tomatoes, berries and vitamin supplements. Collagen declines in the body after age 40 and can be depleted by a high sugar intake, fast foods and smoking.

In support of vitamin C as an anti wrinkle vitamin, a study from the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition announced the results of researchers from the United Kingdom. They discovered that higher vitamin C intakes were associated with a lower likelihood of a wrinkled skin appearance and skin dryness. Vitamin C majorly improved overall skin appearance in a study of 4,025 women aged 40 to 74.

In my next post, I'll discuss some amazing products such as moisturizing serums with vitamin C in it.

Well as always, I hope this helps!

Cheap Alternative to MakeUp Brushes

February 21, 2015

If you know like I know, then you know good makeup brushes will definitely allow you to achieve a BEAT face!  Unfortunately makeup brushes are super duper expensive, especially if you're paying for a good quality, shed free brush!

Honestly,  most of us can't afford to pay $60 or $70 for the good brushes from Mac, IT cosmetics, Bobbi Brown, Inglot, Urban Decay and the list goes on. No need to worry hunti, I gotcha! I found some great affordable alternatives which proved to be just as useful!!!

Belive it or not, Artist paint brushes are a great cheap alternative to those expensive makeup brushes such as MAC and they serve the same purpose. Go to craft store such as hobby Lobby or Michaels and look for Loew Cornell paint brushes. Loew Cornell brushes are made of goat hair, which is the same material as most good, shed free cosmetic brushes.

I promise you can get a full brush set for less than $20! Well as always I hope this helps...

Did you Know?

What does "Paraben Free" mean?

November 18, 2014

I'm sure you noticed that most of the makeup we love and use says it's "Paraben free". Which is probably why one of my lovely readers asked me a good question.....

Q: When makeup is "paraben free" what exactly does that mean?

A: Parabens are a class of chemicals widely used as preservatives by cosmetic and pharmaceutical  industries. Parabens are effective preservatives primarily for their bactericidal and fungicidal properties. They can be found in shampoos, moisturizers, shaving gels, pharmaceuticals, spray tanning solution, makeup and much more.

When looking for a good quality makeup it should be "paraben free" because parabens have been found in breast cancer tumors (an average of 20 nanograms/g of tissue). Parabens have also displayed the ability to slightly mimic estrogen (a hormone known to play a role in the development of breast cancer). No effective direct links between parabens and cancer have been established, however. Another concern is that the estrogen-mimic aspect of parabens may be a factor in the increasing prevalence of early puberty in girls.

So the next time you walk up to a sales representative for makeup be sure to ask them if the product is Paraben free. The good news it that most cosmetics are jumping on the paraben free bandwagon!

For more info on parabens go to The Good Human

Expiration Dates

Does Make-Up expire?

November 14, 2014

Hey Fresh Faced Beauties...

Have you ever dug in your make-up bag and found some lip Gloss/lipstick you forgot all about, used it and as a result your lips begin to swell or feel tingly? Honey, believe it or not Make-Up does EXPIRE!

The expiration time starts from the time it is opened.

Foundation: 1 year

Powders and shadows: 2 years

Cream shadows: 12 to 18 months

Lipstick, Lip Gloss & lip liner: 2 year

Liquid Mascara & eyeliners: 3 months

Eye & Lip pencils: 3-5 years

Nail Polish: 1 year

Nail Polish remover: Last forever

Shampoo: 2 to 3 years

Facial moisturizer: 12 Months
Concealer: 1 year

Blush/Bronzer: 18 Months

Hairstyling products: 3-5 years

Anti aging & Acne treatment: 3 months to a year. If it changes color then discard!

If the expiration date is not displayed then call the products customer service number.

Make-Up can harbor harmful bacteria that can lead to infections if you don't pay attention to expiration dates. It can also be harmful if you share your cosmetics with friends. So you might want to think twice before you allow your friend to use your make-up.

If your cosmetic product has a slight odor then leave it alone!!! You also want to be careful of where you buy your cosmetic products. Some stores don't have a lot of customers and as a result the owners don't replace products not knowing cosmetics expire. I went to a unpopular little dollar store and purchased some clear Lip gloss. After applying it to my lips, my lips got a rash all over them. (TMI, I know lol) I say all that to say stick with stores who have keep fresh stock of cosmetics or specialize in them. Places such as, CVS, or any drug store, Ulta, Sephora...and well you get the idea.

As always I hope this helps :-) Follow me on Instagram  @facesbymoni
